Melasma is seen as areas of browner skin in the middle of the forehead or upper cheek and upper lip. It is usually women between the ages of 20 and 40 who are affected. Melasma is of purely cosmetic importance.
It is increased melanin that gives the pigmentation. In some people, melasma is triggered by birth control pills and some develop it during pregnancy, but most often no cause is found. Heredity may be a factor. The pigment often becomes clearer in the summer and caution in the sun is recommended.
It is important to protect yourself especially well from the sun. A high solar factor is recommended; SPF 50. It is also important for any treatment with whitening creams (vitamin A and hydroquinone), chemical peeling or laser treatment to be effective. Laser treatment can cause deterioration and should be used with caution. In light skin types in cases where the pigment is considered to lie superficially in the skin and not deeper, laser can be considered. The pigment will often return in time, but good sun protection can counteract this to a certain extent.
