The aging process in the skin

As the years go by, our skin undergoes a number of changes. One of the most obvious changes is a reduction in the production of collagen and elastin, two proteins responsible for keeping the skin firm and supple. This reduction in collagen and elastin can lead to looser skin, fine lines and wrinkles. In addition, the skin's ability to retain moisture decreases, resulting in dryness and a lost "glow" that we associate with youth.

Wrinkles

Wrinkles are often the first sign of aging that we notice. These fine lines and folds are most commonly seen around the eyes, mouth and forehead. While wrinkles are a natural part of the aging process, certain factors such as unprotected sunbathing and smoking can lead to more wrinkles. It is therefore important to avoid factors that lead to more wrinkles and it is essential to have a good skin care routine. A good skin care routine includes daily cleansing of the skin, use of moisturizing creams and regular use of sunscreen. In addition, products containing vitamin A (retinoid) can be effective in reducing wrinkles and improving the structure of the skin.

Pigment spots

Uneven skin tone and pigmentation is another problem that appears as we age. These changes can be attributed to various factors, including UV exposure, hormonal fluctuations and the natural aging process. Sunscreen and sun protection important to prevent pigment changes in the skin. An example of pigment change in the skin is melasma, read more about this here.

Retinoids

Retinoid is a form of Vitamin A. Using a cream containing retinoid causes the signs of aging to become less prominent. Retinoids lead to the renewal of skin cells (keratinocytes), strengthen the barrier function of the epidermis so that less moisture is lost from the skin, protect the breakdown of collagen and prevent the activity of certain enzymes that break down cells in the skin. Furthermore, retinoid also promotes blood flow in the skin.

Retinoid cream can be obtained on prescription from a dermatologist after a medical assessment of the skin.

Tips on how to use retinoid cream

  1. Start gently
Start by applying just a few times a week so that the skin gets used to the cream. NB! The skin will be irritated, red and flaky in some.
  2. Application of retinoid
Use retinoid cream at night. Retinoid cream can make the skin more sensitive to sunlight. Apply a pea-sized amount to clean, dry skin after washing your face.
  3. Moisture
Be careful to apply moisturizer in the morning or some time after using retinoid cream.
  4. Sun protection
It is important to use sunscreen every day, especially when using retinoids.
  5. Patience
The result from retinoid cream can take several weeks before it becomes visible. Be patient and consistent with your skincare routine.

Embrace the natural aging process with joy, and with the right skin care, skin can remain healthy, vibrant and beautiful for many years.
