Ringworm is a common fungal infection of the skin. Ringworm is different from yeast infections, such as candida, which typically affect mucous membranes.
Ringworm has nothing to do with worms but is named because the rash on the body has more redness and flaking on the outer edges, creating a ring-like appearance.
This is typically seen on the abdomen and back. The cause of ringworm is a type of fungus called dermatophytes. This fungus can also cause nail and scalp infections. The fungus causes flaky, red skin with itch.
The fungus can affect both children and adults and is not dangerous. It is common on the feet, and it typically starts with an itchy rash between the smallest toes. This is referred to as "athlete's foot".. Toenails and soles of the feet can also become infected. Other typical areas for this infection are the groin and the scalp. Children in families from subtropical and tropical regions are more prone to scalp fungal infections. The cause of this is unknown. The infection causes red and flaky skin, and sometimes pus and oozing. With scalp fungal infections, it can eventually lead to scarring and bald patches.
The fungus can be transmitted both directly and indirectly, so physical contact is not necessary for transmission. It is believed that gymnasiums, swimming pools, and places with close contact between people are sources of transmission. It can also be transmitted through contact with animals. However, it does not always spread easily. For example, a person can have nail fungus on one nail for several years before other nails on the same foot become affected.
Ringworm is usually treated with antifungal creams. For nail fungus and scalp fungus, oral tablets are necessary. Creams should be applied for at least one week, but preferably longer. Tablets are sometimes taken daily for several months.
