What is

Acne is the medical name for pimples. Acne is quite common and usually starts in early adolescence. For some, this is only a temporary skin problem in the teenage years, but for others the problems follow them well into adulthood. The condition is most frequently seen in adolescents and young adults, and occurs in both sexes. There are three levels of acne: mild, moderate and severe.

What is due

Pimples occur when the pores in the skin become clogged with sebum and dead skin cells. Skin bacteria will eventually invade the clogged pores. The acne bacterium Cutibacteriumacnes will lead to infection in the clogged pores. Then the skin area becomes red and swollen with small nodules and pus.

How to treat

Acne is treated according to severity. Many people first try skin care with over-the-counter creams. A dermatologist will initially try to treat acne with prescription creams with active ingredients that are intended to open and clean the pores and/or reduce inflammation in the skin. If cream treatment does not provide a satisfactory effect, the dermatologist will try antibiotics in tablet form and finally isotretinoin.
