Mollusks are 2-5 mm skin-colored smooth spheres with a small central depression. The number can vary from a few to many. Usually there are several in one body area.
The infection is caused by the Molluscum Contagiosum Virus which is in the Poxvirus family. It usually takes 2-8 weeks from the time one is infected until the mollusks appear. Infection occurs primarily through skin contact, but also via towels. In adults, the infection is most often transmitted through skin contact sexually. The molluscs can be spread by clawing and shaving.
As the mollusks disappear by themselves, treatment is usually unnecessary. Removal by scraping or freezing can be carried out, but may present a greater risk of scarring. There are also over-the-counter molluscum remedies, but they often cause an unpleasant burning sensation. Mollusks usually disappear on their own within 9 to 12 months. Especially in people with atopic eczema or a weakened immune system, the infection can last longer and the rash becomes more widespread.
