Lichen sclerosus is a chronic skin disease that most often causes severe itching on the labia, on the clitoris or around the anus. The skin is inflamed, red, often with cracks and soreness. Eventually, whitish skin is seen. Some people experience pain during intercourse. Untreated, the disease can cause scarring and adhesions. The mucous membrane of the vagina is not affected. In men, it is most often the head of the penis and the foreskin that are affected and become whitish or red and irritated with cracking. The foreskin often becomes tight. In some men, early treatment can provide lasting improvement. Lichen sclerosus in skin areas other than the abdomen is far more rare.
The cause is unclear, but we still know that it is not an infection and it is not contagious. Mechanical irritation can lead to deterioration.
Strong cortisone cream is the main treatment for both women and men. Gentle wash, preferably with oil. If only the foreskin is affected in a man, removing it can solve the problem permanently. In cases where the vaginal opening becomes too narrow, surgery is also appropriate. Due to a small risk of skin cancer in the affected area, you should go for regular follow-up with a doctor. If wounds occur that do not heal despite treatment, you should see a doctor.
