In case of inflammation of the hair follicle (folliculitis), the hair follicles in an area of the skin are inflamed. This is seen as a red spot or bump, often with a small white pimple and can itch. Folliculitis can also be deeper. Acne, pimples, is also a form of hair follicle inflammation.
Folliculitis has several different causes. Both bacterial and fungal infections are common. The type of bacteria yellow staphylococci, Staphylococcus aureus, is most common, while hair follicle inflammation after a hot tub is most often caused by the bacteria Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Folliculitis after a hot tub is usually most pronounced in the swimwear area and usually goes away on its own. The diagnosis of hair follicle inflammation is made by the doctor examining and looking at the rash and sometimes taking a sample for infection to clarify the cause.
Other common causes of inflammation of hair follicles are incorrect shaving technique and are more common in people with curly hair. It is recommended to shave with the hair and not too close to the skin to reduce the risk of such inflammation. Less commonly, folliculitis in the shaving area is caused by infection.
Tight clothing and sweating can also lead to folliculitis
Folliculitis is usually self-limiting and resolves on its own. People with eczema or a weakened immune system may be more susceptible to hair follicle inflammation and they are also more susceptible to a more serious course and will more often need treatment. Antibiotics are only rarely necessary. Most often, disinfectants such as washing with chlorhexidine, Hibiscrub or using benzoyl peroxide on the skin are sufficient.
