Redness comes from a rapid expansion of the small blood vessels in the skin, mostly on the cheeks and upper chest. Some people experience a little warmth in the skin, and some people experience sweating at the same time. In some the redness is more permanent, but in others there is great variation.
It could be stress hormones or nerves that cause the blood vessels to dilate. Flushing can be triggered by alcohol (most common in ethnic Asians), food, medication or psychological stress. The skin disease rosacea is often accompanied by permanent redness and blood vessels in the skin and small pimples. The reason why we humans have the ability to blush is unclear, but it may be an expression that something is embarrassing or unpleasant.
The treatment targets the cause of the redness. Redness caused by rosacea can be treated with a prescription cream or laser.
