Candida is a yeast that is part of our normal flora in both skin and mucous membranes, but occasionally it can flourish and cause infection in the skin. There are many different types of candida. Candida infection of the skin is most often caused by candida albicans.
Areas of skin become red, inflamed and can become sore. Most often, small red dots are seen at the edge of the rash. Diaper rash can also be caused by an overgrowth of candida.
Angular cheilitis is a rash in the corners of the mouth where candida is sometimes the cause.
Chronic nail fold infection is often caused by a mixture of bacteria and candida.
Conditions that weaken our immune system can increase the risk of candida infections. Candida infections are more common in people with diabetes, cancer and HIV/AIDS. Some medications can also increase the risk of such an infection.
Being overweight, having large breasts or a disability that causes skin to lie against skin overtime, and moisture occurs, also increases the risk of candida infection in itself. Poor drying between the toes after a shower and foot sweat are also predisposing factors.
In most cases, antifungal creams such as Canesten or Daktar two to three times a day for 3-4 weeks will provide improvement, but predisposing factors can cause relapse. In case of infection between the toes, it is important to dry well after bathing and showering. In the case of severe complaints or a poor effect of the simpler measures, you should seek a doctor who can adapt the treatment.
