With a dry scalp, dead skin cells from the outermost layer of the skin loosen more frequently than normal. This is often mistaken for dandruff. In cases of a dry scalp, there are usually fewer flakes than with dandruff, and they easily fall onto the shoulders.
If you have a dry scalp, it is recommended to avoid washing your hair every day. Washing your hair daily can dry out the scalp.
Use mild shampoos, and apply conditioner only to the hair ends. Rinse your hair thoroughly after washing and avoid using excessive hair styling products.
At the pharmacy, you can purchase moisturizinggels/treatments for the scalp. These provide both moisture and relieve itching.
If you need additional treatment for itch, you can ask your doctor for a prescription for a liquid cortisone solution (liniment) that you can use as needed during certain periods.
