Rosacea is a chronic inflammatory skin condition characterized by symptoms of redness, discomfort, and, in some cases, acne-like eruptions. In rare instances, rosacea can also affect the eyes.
Gentle cleansing and moisturizers that provide hydration are important for sensitive skin that easily flushes and becomes red. There are various types of serums and moisturizers available at the pharmacy that have the ability to reduce redness. These creams may have a greenish tint to camouflage the redness.
Day creams should offer sun protection with a sun protection factor (SPF). The sun is an example of a trigger factor that causes blood vessels in the face to dilate, leading to flare-ups of rashes and discomfort. Factors that exacerbate rosacea can vary from person to person. Other examples of trigger factors include stress, highly spiced foods, exercise, red wine, and hot beverages. Rosacea often tends to flare up in spring when the sun reappears.
You should avoid scrubs, peels, and certain facial masks as they can easily further irritate the skin.
There are some over-the-counter medications available at the pharmacy that can be used to treat rosacea.
