Skincare for Psoriasis

Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory skin disease that is often hereditary. It is characterized by a fourfold increase in the rate of skin cell division compared to normal. This results in the formation of plaques, known as psoriasis plaques, which are often covered with a dry, flaky layer called hyperkeratosis. It is important to treat this flaky layer before addressing the inflammation.

Exfoliating Treatment

Exfoliating treatment can be done using creams, oils, and ointments. You can purchase salicylic vaseline or hair oil with different concentrations, as well as moisturizers containing propylene glycol, lactic acid, or urea at the pharmacy. Ask the pharmacist for moisturizers with exfoliating effects. These should only be applied to psoriasis plaques. After application, you can cover the treated skin with plastic wrap for enhanced effectiveness. This allows the cream to penetrate deeper into the skin and provide better results.

Soaking in a bath or using a sauna can also have a "scaling" effect on psoriasis plaques. It can be beneficial to mix different products in the bath, such as sea salt, bath oil, or potassium permanganate, depending on the desired effect. It is important not to rub or scrub the scales that remain on the skin after the bath, as this can cause irritation and small injuries. This can further worsen the rash (known as the Köbner phenomenon).

Regular Moisturizing Treatment

Moisturizers are an essential part of psoriasis treatment. Our recommendation is to apply moisturizer to the affected areas every morning and evening, even during periods of minimal rash, as this can prevent new outbreaks and reduce the need for cortisone use. You should always apply the moisturizer after showering or bathing, as it absorbs more easily into damp skin. Creams containing glycerol and carbamide help the skin retain moisture. If you undergo light therapy, it may be beneficial to apply moisturizer before the treatment. Currently, there are no moisturizers for psoriasis available by prescription.

Additional Advice

If you have stubborn psoriasis plaques that are difficult to remove with regular creams, you can try a prescription Dermovate solution and thin Duoderm. Apply the Dermovate solution to the affected plaques in two rounds and allow it to dry thoroughly before applying the thin Duoderm plaster. Thin Duoderm plasters resemble blister plasters and are available indifferent sizes that can be cut to fit. Warm it between your hands while waiting for the Dermovate solution to dry completely.

Note: If the Dermovate solution has not dried completely and the skin is not completely dry, the Duoderm plaster will not adhere properly. Take your time to ensure the plaster adheres well. This way, you can exercise and shower with the plaster, which only needs to be changed approximately once a week.
