Sweat production intensifies during puberty. Some people experience excessive sweating under their arms, in their palms, soles of the feet, or in the head and neck area. The condition can be hereditary. Other types of sweating, such as cold sweats and night sweats, should be investigated by a general practitioner to exclude underlying diseases.
In hyperhidrosis, excessive sweating can be experienced even at rest, independent of stress or physical and mental strain. Some need to change clothes multiple times a day due to sweat rings, others have todry their hands before greeting others orchange shoes daily Excessive sweating at night is unusual in hyperhidrosis.
Most people try all available deodorants at the pharmacy. Deodorants containing aluminum compounds are usually the most effective.
For excessive sweating under the arms, Botox injections work best, but the treatment must be repeated 2-4 times a year.
Surgery of sweat glands (sweat gland removal) is rarely performed.
For excessive sweating in the palms and soles of the feet, iontophoresis is available. In this treatment, the palms/soles of the feet are placed in a water bath connected to a current twice a week for about 20 minutes. The treatment is carried out over 6-8 weeks and can be repeated twice a year.
For full-body sweating or sweating in the head/neck area, certain types of blood pressure medication or medication that inhibits the transmission of signals to sweat glands (anticholinergics) can be tried.
There is no curative treatment available.
